Two things reduce an array’s output over time, and separating them matters because only one of them is recoverable. Degradation is the permanent element. Silicon cells lose a small percentage of their capacity in the first year and a smaller amount annually thereafter, and manufacturers publish those figures as part of the performance warranty. It is gradual, it is predictable, and no maintenance reverses it. Soiling is the recoverable element, and it behaves differently. It accumulates faster than degradation, it compounds as consolidated film gives the next season’s material something to bind to, and it can be removed entirely. Telling them apart in the data is easier than it sounds. Degradation produces a slow, smooth decline of a fraction of a per cent a year. Soiling produces a steeper decline, often with seasonal structure — worse after dry spells, partially relieved by heavy rain — and, crucially, it recovers after a clean. Comparing output either side of a visit, normalised against irradiance, therefore separates the two directly: whatever comes back was soiling, and whatever does not was something else. Cleaning is the only way to run that test, and it happens to be the cheapest diagnostic available. Purified water, filtered and passed through deionising resin until it carries effectively no dissolved solids, is applied at low pressure through a soft filament brush on a telescopic pole, with bonded material wetted and given time to soften and the frame line cleared specifically. Owners in Wicken worried about a declining system usually learn most from what happens after solar panel cleaning rather than before it.
Being able to say what a clean did rather than what it might do is the most useful thing a contractor can offer, and it requires nothing more than photographs and a willingness to be checked. Images taken before and after, close enough to show the frame line and the lower edges rather than as a flattering wide view, establish what was physically removed. Generation compared either side of the visit — same period, different years, or normalised against irradiance where the data allows — establishes what that was worth. Between them the recoverable and the permanent are separated without anyone having to speculate. What is not offered is a percentage figure quoted in advance, because soiling losses vary enormously with pitch, exposure and how long an array has been left, and a number given before seeing the glass is guesswork. The work behind it is fixed. Purified water produced through filtration and deionising resin, never taken from a tap. Soft filament brush heads with cushioned bumpers. Low pressure throughout, with nothing directed at frame seals, flashings or junction boxes. No operative putting weight on a module at any point, since the resulting microcracking is permanent and never becomes visible. Full coverage of every panel including the frame line and lower edges. Public liability insurance and a risk assessment matched to the actual height and configuration sit behind every visit. Householders in Wicken comparing solar panel cleaning services should favour whoever is happiest to be measured afterwards, since confidence in a method usually shows up as a willingness to be checked against somebody else’s figures.
Cleaning is worth arranging even where the answer turns out to be degradation, because it is the cheapest way to establish which of the two is responsible. An electrical investigation or a module-level inspection costs considerably more, and eliminating soiling first makes either far more focused. The cleaning figure comes from module count, charged per panel with the rate improving as arrays grow. Travel, unloading, assembling poles and producing purified water are fixed costs incurred once regardless of how much glass follows them, so that portion spreads further across a larger system — which is also why a minimum charge applies and why a very small array never costs proportionally little. Reach adjusts it next. An accessible elevation with firm level standing and clear room to extend a pole is the least expensive arrangement, while unusual height, restricted ground and obstructions between the operative and the wall all lengthen the work. Where hired access equipment is genuinely required it appears as a separate stated item rather than being folded quietly into the rate. Condition supplies the third input, since consolidated film and established growth come away with dwell time and repeated gentle passes rather than force. Pro Clean Xtreme assesses the property before quoting so all three are settled in advance and the figure holds on the day. Quotations are free and carry no obligation, repeat bookings sit below one-off rates, and the price covers the complete array including frames and lower edges, purified water throughout and photographs afterwards, which together provide the before-and-after evidence that any sensible comparison depends on.
Remove years of dirt, grime, algae and staining for a cleaner, fresher finish.
Professional techniques designed to protect your surfaces while delivering outstanding results.
Keep your property looking its best with regular solar panel cleaning.
Professional solar panel cleaning in Wicken offers a simple and effective way to maintain the cleanliness, appearance and performance of your solar panels. Over time, dirt, dust, bird droppings, pollen, leaves, algae and other environmental debris can accumulate across the surface of solar panels, leaving them looking dirty and potentially reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the panels. Regular solar panel cleaning helps remove this unwanted build-up, keeping the panels cleaner and allowing them to receive as much available sunlight as possible. Keeping solar panels clean can also support ongoing maintenance by making it easier to identify visible issues, damage or areas that may require further attention. Professionally cleaned solar panels can improve the overall appearance of your property while helping you get the most from your solar installation. Using suitable cleaning methods and equipment for solar panel surfaces is important to achieve effective results while reducing the risk of scratching, marking or damaging the panels. Whether your solar panels have accumulated bird mess, dust, dirt, pollen, algae or general environmental grime, professional solar panel cleaning in Wicken can help keep them cleaner, clearer and better maintained throughout the year.
Commercial operators have the data to separate degradation from soiling properly, and doing so is worth the effort because the two call for entirely different responses. Degradation is a modelled cost of ownership, accounted for in the yield forecast and covered by the performance warranty where it exceeds specification. Soiling is an operational loss that can be removed on a schedule. The test is a clean followed by a normalised comparison. Output either side of the visit, adjusted for irradiance, quantifies what was recovered; whatever does not return is either degradation or a fault worth investigating separately. Tracking that over successive visits also establishes the site’s fouling rate, which is what allows the interval to be set from measurement. Delivery is surveyed and documented in advance. Module count, mounting arrangement, structural condition and fragility, edge protection and the safest route to every row are established, producing a site-specific risk assessment and method statement agreed with the responsible person before dates are confirmed. Ground-level pole work is used where reach permits, with mobile elevating work platforms or rope access where it does not and operatives qualified for the method. Purified water is supplied from tanks brought to site, applied at low pressure through soft brushes, with frames and lower edges cleaned alongside the glass and no chemicals entering drainage. Dated photographs and a written completion record follow every visit. Operators around Wicken investigating long-term underperformance generally find commercial solar panel cleaning the necessary first step before any warranty conversation, since a manufacturer will reasonably ask whether the modules were maintained at all during the period in question.

The ideal frequency depends on your location, surroundings and how quickly dirt and debris build up. For many properties, an annual clean can help keep panels clear and well maintained.
Yes, keeping panels free from dirt, bird droppings, dust, pollen and other debris allows more sunlight to reach the surface. Cleaning can therefore help your panels operate as efficiently as possible.
Solar panels can collect bird droppings, dust, pollen, leaves, algae, grime and other environmental debris. These deposits can build up over time and affect the cleanliness of the panel surface.
